Digital Maps, Real Opportunities For A Safer Neighbourhood
The collaborative maps, comments, and reflections on safety by residents of South Valour are being mobilized through interactive digital maps showing the assets and resources of the community. This is one small part of a critical participatory action research project entitled implementing anti-oppressive approaches to community safety in Winnipeg’s West End led by Dr. Julie Chamberlain and the South Valour Residents Association. Based on data collected at a community asset mapping event, we are digitizing and visualizing conversations to allow for reflection, analysis, and action by both the research team and broader South Valour community. From identifying opportunities for local partnerships with businesses to informing art walks through residents favourite neighbourhood streets, these digital maps provide real opportunities for reframing a neighbourhood.
