Let’s Talk Bats!
Flipping the narrative of bats from “ewww” to “ooooo!” This photo showcases Taylor Cangemi sharing her work in bat conservation research with students at Sam Livingston Elementary School in Calgary, Alberta. Taylor has spent her past two summers working as a field research technician for Dr. Craig Willis’ Bat Lab. The lab is based out of UWinnipeg, but field work is conducted across Manitoba and Ontario. Bats are highly overlooked and misconceived creatures, therefore, Taylor hoped to educate younger generations about bats, raise awareness about their endangerment status and importance in the ecosystem, and potentially spark students’ interest in getting involved in scientific research. Astoundingly, countless students left the talk expressing that bats were their new favourite animal!
