Developing Lake Trout Twins

Microscopic view of fish eggs.

This picture shows a conjoined-twin lake trout egg developing under the microscope. We collected these eggs from adult female lake trout in the field (northern Manitoba), fertilized them in the lab, and raised them for 70 days. The goal of my research is to determine if stressing out lake trout moms (by angling for them) effects the next generation of offspring. This work will inform the fisheries branch of the provincial government about angling regulations that are needed to conserve lake trout for years to come!
