Beatrice & John Zack Scholarship in the Classics
This Scholarship is provided by the Erica and Arnold Rogers Fund for Academic Excellence. It will be awarded annually to the most promising student entering the final year of the 4-year or Honours Classics Program.
Colleen Madson Memorial Prize
Awarded to a student who obtains the highest mark in the course “Introduction to Classical Mythology”.
Dr. Robert Gold Prize in Classics
This Prize has been established by the Seniors Winnipeg Arts Group (SWAG) to mark the occasion of Dr. Robert Gold’s retirement and to honour his dedication as a teacher. Dr. Gold taught Classics at United College from 1960 to 1964 at The University of Winnipeg from 1969 to 1995. The prize will be awarded annually to the student who achieves the highest standing in Classics 2002, Greek Art and Architecture and Classics 2003, Roman Art and Architecture. In the event that no student meets these criteria, the Prize will be awarded to the student who obtains the highest standing in one of the two courses.
Edwin & Ann Eagle Memorial Scholarship in Classics
This Scholarship commemorates Edwin & Anne Eagle’s dedication to The University, and will be awarded to an outstanding student in the Department of Classics. Professor Emeritus Edwin Eagle taught Classics at United College, which became The University of Winnipeg, for over 40 years. He served as the Department’s only member from 1940-60, as Dean of Arts and Science from 1960-68, and as Department Head in Classics until his retirement in 1976. Dr. Edwin Eagle served faithfully as the last Dean of Arts and Science of United College, and as the first Dean of Arts and Science at The University of Winnipeg, and his efforts were instrumental in establishing The University of Winnipeg. Dr. Eagle also demonstrated his strong support for Women’s and Gender Studies programs. In the event that a suitable candidate is not found in the Department of Classics, the award may be given to a student enrolled in Women’s and Gender Studies.
Future Fund – Classics
The Future Fund will provide the Classics Department with flexible and critical resources required to address the immediate academic priorities (areas of greatest need) of today while building a secure foundation for the future. The purpose of the fund is to strengthen and support the academic mission and vision of the University by supporting the academic units, innovation and community. The flexibility of the fund will build on existing efforts; create new opportunities and open doors to innovative academic development as strategically identified by the President and the Chair of the Department. More specifically, the fund will support activities such as faculty research, academic enhancements and development, innovative programming, chairs, professorships, facilities and infrastructure upgrades and technology, supporting student and faculty experiences gained through competitions, case studies, exchanges, conferences, faculty and staff recruitment, etc. The Future Fund will include undesignated and designated funds (if designated by a donor) that will enable the Chair the opportunity to allocate and assign funding to address strategic priorities and critical needs.
Hanna Family Scholarship
This Scholarship was established by Alan (LL.D. 1992; Board of Regents, 1976-1991, and Chair, 1984-86) and Dianne (UW student of Classics and Art History), proud parents of Robert (UW student of Philosophy), Douglas, and Donald, all of whom are university medalists. It will be awarded to a student with high academic standing who is continuing studies towards a degree at The University of Winnipeg. Special consideration may be given to students majoring in Classics, History, or Philosophy.
John Dee Maurer Prize
This Prize will be awarded to the student who obtains the highest standing in one of the courses Classics 3754, Ancient Epic in Translation, Classics 3755, Ancient Drama in Translation, and Classics 3756, Topics in Ancient Literature.
Mark Golden Scholarship in Classics
This scholarship will be awarded to a Classics major who shows academic promise, scholarly potential, and an interest in community engagement. Candidates must have completed a minimum of 60 credit hours and be enrolled in the Honours or 4-year Major. A minimum major-GPA of 3.5 is required to be considered; the GPA requirement is competitive. Preference will be given to students enrolled in the Honours degree program and who have a strong record of on- or off-campus volunteer activity and community involvement. This scholarship commemorates Mark Golden, Emeritus Professor of Classics, who served with distinction as a member of the faculty of the Department of Classics from 1982-2015. Across his three decades of service to the University, Mark was well known as a generous colleague, distinguished scholar, and inspiring teacher. Mark’s scholarship helped to redefine our knowledge of the past, and he was a ground-breaking researcher with an international and interdisciplinary reputation in the areas of childhood and sport in Ancient Greece and Rome. Amid a slew of awards and fellowships throughout his career, he was the Honorary President of the Classical Association of Canada from 2018-2020. His contributions, however, went far beyond scholarship and the discipline of Classics, and his focus was always on others, especially students, many of whom remember him with fondness and delight decades later. Moreover, Mark was a tireless advocate for social change and action within the University, in Winnipeg and more broadly in Canada

The University of Winnipeg Classics Students Association Scholarship
This Scholarship will be awarded to a deserving undergraduate student majoring in Classics who meets the following criteria: a full-time or part-time student with a minimum grade point average of 3.75 in Classics courses from varied areas within the discipline, a minimum of 18 Classics credit hours completed, an active member of The University of Winnipeg Classics Students’ Association, and an active volunteer on campus.
