Condren Rex Keating Scholarship in Criminal Justice

Department: Criminal Justice

This Scholarship was established by Dr. Elizabeth Dawes in memory of her husband Norman Kenneth Kehler (1959-2007), whom she met through a summer course in Salamanca, Spain. It is awarded, upon the recommendation of the Department of Modern Languages and Literatures, to a continuing student who has completed at least 9 credits of Spanish at the 2000 or 3000 level with distinguished performance. Preference will be given to a student with a declared major or minor in Spanish Studies.

Criminal Justice Master’s Degree Scholarship

Department: Criminal Justice

This scholarship will be awarded to an outstanding full-time Criminal Justice graduate student. Preference will be given to a student who focuses their graduate studies on punishment and corrections. This scholarship was established in 2019 by Dr. Michael Weinrath who was the founding chair of the Department of Criminal Justice. Before joining UWinnipeg, he formerly worked for the provincial correctional service in Alberta. Dr. Weinrath has extensive experience researching correctional services with his students, many of whom have then moved on to work in the criminal justice system in Manitoba and other parts of Canada.

Friesen and Wendl Corrections Memorial Scholarship

Department: Criminal Justice

This scholarship was established in 2012 by Dr. Michael Weinrath to honour Werner Rudolf Friesen and Joseph Wendl, two living unit officers who were killed in the line of duty at Stony Mountain Institution in 1984. This scholarship has been created with the blessing of the surviving family members, and support from the Criminal Justice Students’ Association and management/staff at Stony Mountain Institution. Dr. Weinrath formerly worked in Correctional Services in Alberta . This scholarship will be awarded to an outstanding Criminal Justice major at The University of Winnipeg, who has completed at least 60 hours of study and shown an aptitude for corrections or corrections research.

RCMP Veterans Association Manitoba Division Opportunity Fund Bursary

Department: Criminal Justice

The RCMP Veterans Association Manitoba Division Opportunity Fund Bursary will support a Criminal Justice major who has completed a minimum of 24 credit hours and meets the criteria of the Opportunity Fund. This bursary will be offered every three years starting in Winter 2026. The RCMP Veterans Association Manitoba Division Trust Fund generously provides bursary support to the University of Winnipeg, University of Manitoba and Brandon University on a rotational basis.

Skoog Prize

Department: Criminal Justice

This Prize was established in honour of Associate Professor Douglas Skoog, faculty member of the Sociology Department and Coordinator of the Studies in Justice and Law Enforcement Program at The University of Winnipeg. It will be awarded to an outstanding student in Criminal Justice Studies who has completed at least 60 credit hours and has demonstrated community involvement (preferably related to criminal justice).

Suzanne St. Yves Amani (Peace) Prize

Department: Criminal Justice

This prize will be given to a student who has completed at least 30 credit hours and has a declared major in Conflict Resolution Studies. The recipient will have a demonstrated commitment to peace building, either locally or internationally and demonstrate financial need. Preference will be given to adult learners, Indigenous students, students with disabilities, newcomers to Canada, people from war-affected regions, refugees, or students from inner-city neighbourhoods in Winnipeg. Applicants must provide a list of activities, training, and/or volunteerism that demonstrates peace-building experiences as well as one letter of reference from a professor/instructor at Menno Simons College.
