Anna Rikkelman Scholarship in Geography
This Scholarship was established in 2001 by Anna Rikkelman, a former student with a deep concern for the health of the environment and the welfare of her fellow Manitobans. It will be awarded annually to a continuing student majoring in Geography in any undergraduate degree program who has contributed to environmental or humanitarian causes through active participation in local, national, or international organizations.
Brian Evans Memorial Scholarship in Geography
This fund was established in 1993 in memory of Dr. Brian M. Evans who taught Geography at The University of Winnipeg from 1963 to 1993. Scholarships will be awarded, on the recommendation of the department, to one or more continuing students majoring in Geography in any undergraduate degree program.
Frederick & Edith (Robertson) Baragar Scholarship
This Scholarship was established by family and friends, in memory of Frederick Baragar, 1914 graduate of Wesley College and Edith (Robertson) Baragar, 1917 Lady Stick and graduate of Wesley College. It will be awarded alternately to a student of high academic standing in English or Geography who is continuing in a Major or Honours program.
Future Fund – Geography
The Future Fund will provide the Geography Department with flexible and critical resources to address the immediate academic priorities (areas of greatest need) of today while building a secure foundation for the future. The purpose of the fund is to strengthen and support the academic mission and vision of the Unviersity by supporting the academic units. innovation and community. The flexibility of the fund will build on existing efforts; create new opportunities and open doors to innovative academic development as strategically identified by the Dean of Arts and the Chair of the Department. More specifically, the fund will suuport activities such as faculty reserch, academic enhancements and development, innovative programming, chairs, professorships, facilities and infrastructure upgrades and technology, supporting student and faculyt experiences gained through competitions, case studies, exchanges, conferences, faculty and staff recruitment, etc. The Future Fund will include undesignated and designated funds (if designated by a donor) that will enable the Chair opportunity to allocate and assing funding to address strategic priorities and critical needs.
Geography Scholarships and Bursary Fund
The Geography Scholarship and Bursary allows the Chair to offer additional support to the student award program within the department. Funds raised are awarded to students based on a combination of academic performance and financial need. Humboldt Scholarship in Geography
Two Scholarships have been established by Dr. Brian Evans in memory of his father. Each will be awarded on the nomination of the Department of Geography to a student of outstanding academic promise who has a minimum of 12 credit hours in Geography and has declared a 4-year BA or BSc major (includes honours students) in Geography at The University of Winnipeg.
Indigenous Land-Based Language Learning Fund
To encourage academic excellence at minimum $1,000 of each annual payment will be allocated to students of the U of W Faculty of Business and Economics, based on selection criteria mutually agreed upon by the Donor and Faculty, in the form of cash scholarships to students. To supplement the cash scholarships, the Donor will offer CPA tuition scholarship to selected scholarship recipients.
Kim Monson Bursary Fund
The Kim Monson Bursary Fund was created by the family of Kim Monson, to commemorate Kim’s devotion to The University of Winnipeg, mentoring young women in science and in recognition of the bursary support she received as a student. Kim immensely enjoyed her studies and her 35-year career in the Geography Department at UWinnipeg. She especially loved working with students and was dedicated to encouraging young women to pursue careers in science. In honour of Kim’s legacy, this bursary fund will assist students studying physical geography at The University of Winnipeg. Preference will be given to students actively involved in field work, and to those students who identify as female.
Marcia Anne Faurer & Peter Bennett Scholarship
This Scholarship was established in memory of Dr. Marcia Anne Faurer who taught geography at The University of Winnipeg from 1991 to 1995, and also honours the memory of Peter Bennett who taught Computer Mapping and GIS for several years in the Department of Geography. It will be awarded to the continuing Major or Honours student in Geography who has achieved the highest combined standing in Geography 2304 Computer Mapping, and Geography 2306 Introduction to Geographic Information Systems from the previous two academic years.
Scholarship in Urban Geography
This Scholarship will be awarded annually to a student majoring in Geography who demonstrates a passion for urban geography.
Susan L. Rogers Scholarship in Geography
Notes:This Scholarship is provided by the Erica and Arnold Rogers Fund for Academic Excellence. It will be awarded annually to the most promising student entering the final year of either the 3-year, 4-year or 4-year Honours Geography program.
The Amy Gilbert Memorial Award
This Award has been established by the friends and family of Amy Gilbert and honours her passion for the environment and social justice. Amy had decided to pursue a degree in naturopathy, and it was her dream to see medical doctors and naturopathic doctors working together to help others reach diagnosis and treatment sooner. This Award will be given to a student at The University of Winnipeg in any major within the Faculty of Science, with the intent of pursing studies in naturopathy. If such a candidate cannot be found, it will be awarded to a Second or Third Year student majoring in Environmental Studies and Sciences, who has completed course work, done research or has an interest in the Environmental Lakes Area. Amy’s passionate nature shone through in all she did especially in her love for the environment and environmental awareness. The Experimental Lakes Area (ELA) was one of Amy’s favourite places; she referred to it as her “heaven on earth”. Amy was driven in her desire to see ELA’s invaluable environmental work and studies continue, not just for Canada but also globally. Recipients must also demonstrate financial need.
