Esclarmonde de Foix, a 12th century aristocrat in what is now southern France, was a prominent convert to the persecuted religious sect known as catharism. In naming the award after her, the donor wishes to pay tribute to a medieval woman of evident moral courage, self-confidence, and intellectual vigour. It will be awarded annually to a student who has completed a minimum of 30 credit hours, including at least 6 credit hours in French, for studies in French language and/or French Literature in France at a university, recognized language institute, or any other institution approved by the Department of French Studies.

Heritage Language Fund
This Fund is to support the cost of hiring a contract academic staff member to teach one full course equivalent in a heritage language in any given year. The course receiving the support will depend on the needs of the Faculty of Arts as determined by the Dean of Arts. In order to teach many of its courses in languages other than English, the UW relies on contract academic staff: instructors who are hired on a per-course basis. Because of how these courses are staffed and financed, they need to attract a certain number of students, preferably 15-20, in order to be viable. Otherwise they may be cancelled. This means that there is no assurance that our existing courses in heritage languages such as German, Spanish, Italian, and Korean will continue to be offered. And without assured enrolments and funding for instructors, we cannot add courses in any other heritage languages such as Portuguese, Ukrainian, or Tagalog. Students who come to the UW hoping to learn a language may find themselves with increasingly limited options.
