Dr. David Owen Memorial Scholarship in Philosophy

Department: Philosophy

Established by the family, friends and colleagues of Dr. David Owen, a distinguished scholar and professor at the University, 1932-1972. Dr. Owen chaired the department of Philosophy from 1935 until his retirement in 1966 and continued teaching until 1972, in 1973 he was made a Fellow of United College in recognition of the outstanding contribution which he made to the institution. This Scholarship will be awarded on the recommendation of the department to a senior student in the Major or Honours program in Philosophy best exemplifying qualities of academic excellence and breadth of interest.

Future Fund-Philosophy

Department: Philosophy

The Future Fund will provide the Department of Philosophy with flexible and critical resources required to address the immediate academic priorities (areas of greatest need) of today while building a secure foundation for the future. The purpose of the fund is to strengthen and support the academic mission and vision of the University by supporting the academic units, innovation and community. The flexibility of the fund will build on existing efforts; create new opportunities and open doors to innovative academic development as strategically identified by the Chair of the Department. More specifically, the fund will support activities such as faculty research, academic enhancements and development, innovative programming, chairs, professorships, facilities and infrastructure upgrades and technology, supporting student and faculty experiences gained through competitions, case studies, exchanges, conferences, faculty and staff recruitment, etc. The Future Fund will include undesignated and designated funds (if designated by a donor) that will enable the Chair the opportunity to allocate and assign funding to address strategic priorities and critical needs.

Peter Miller Environmental Ethics Prize

Department: Philosophy

This prize was established at the time of his retirement to honour Dr. Peter Miller and his years of teaching Philosophy at the University of Winnipeg (1967-1999). It will be awarded on the recommendation of the Department of Philosophy to a student who has achieved distinction in the study of Environmental Ethics.

Professor Philip B. Wright Memorial Prize

Department: Philosophy

This Prize will be presented to an undergraduate student with significant academic achievement in the study of botany. The Prize was established by his friends and colleagues on the retirement of Dr. Richard Staniforth from The University of Winnipeg and the Manitoba Association of Plant Biologists. It recognizes Dr. Staniforth’s many accomplishments as a teacher and mentor, encouraging students to pursue study in the botanical sciences, his enduring support for and life-long love of learning, and the pursuit of further academic degrees.

Sydney Gallis Memorial Scholarship in Philosophy

Department: Philosophy

This Scholarship will be awarded annually, on the recommendation of the Department to a meritorious student continuing his/her studies in Philosophy who exemplifies the spirit of philosophy.

Victor Y. Shimizu Kant Prize

Department: Philosophy

These Prizes have been established by Dr. Prem Shanker in memory of his parents, Dr. Vishnu and Vachan Shanker. Awarded to two students, one from any University course and another from the Collegiate, who have written the best essays promoting dialogue, understanding, and mutual acceptance between two or more religious traditions. Preference will be given to essays which consider both Eastern and Western religious traditions, or which promote the idea of non-violent ways of bringing about social change. A student may submit the paper for consideration, or a teacher may forward the submission to the Chair, Department of Religious Studies, on or before April 1.
