Albert Clifford Matthews Memorial Scholarship in Politics

Department: Political Science

This Scholarship has been established by Douglas, Cameron, and Valerie Matthews (Class of 1975) in memory of their father, Albert Clifford Matthews (Class of 1948). It will be awarded, on the recommendation of the Department, to the student who obtains the highest standing in the Third Year of a Major or Honours program in Politics and who continues in Honours Politics in the following year.

Bill Blaikie Award for Social Justice

Department: Political Science, Religion & Culture

This award will support a continuing undergraduate student majoring in either Religion and Culture, or Political Science. The successful candidate must be a graduate from one of the following schools: Murdoch MacKay Collegiate, College Pierre-Elliott-Trudeau, or Transcona Collegiate. The student must have a minimum GPA of 3.0 and demonstrate financial need.

D. J. Jessiman Scholarship in Politics

Department: Political Science

In honour of Professor Claudia Wright (1940-2009), the Political Science Department will award an annual prize for an outstanding essay written by a student from any political science course. It will also award runners up. Any instructor or professor teaching a course in the Political Science Department can nominate essays that they deem to be truly outstanding and worthy of this prestigious Prize. The student authors of these papers must be informed and consent to the nomination and must provide a clean (un-graded) copy of the essay. Nominations can be made anytime throughout the academic year.

Dieter Hoehne Memorial Scholarship

Department: Political Science

This Scholarship will be awarded, at the recommendation of the Politics Department, to an Indigenous student with the highest standing entering the Second, Third, or Fourth Year of the Politics 3-year, 4-year or Honours program.

Kristine Hansen Scholarship in Labour and Equity Issues

Faculty: Arts Department: Political Science, Women's & Gender Studies

This Scholarship will be awarded to an outstanding undergraduate or graduate student who is currently studying at The University of Winnipeg. The recipient will have a demonstrated interest in labour and equity issues, either through community involvement, their studies or research. In even years the Scholarship will go to a student majoring in Women’s and Gender Studies. In odd years the Scholarship will go to a student majoring in Political Science. Dr. Kristine Hansen joined the Psychology Department at The University of Winnipeg in 1980, specializing in Developmental Psychology and most recently in Moral Development. Twice UWFA President, Dr. Hansen was instrumental, with other faculty members, in facilitating the first ever study supported by The University of Winnipeg Board of Regents into gender-based wage disparity. In the early 1990’s, she inaugurated the UWFA Status of Women Committee. Dr. Hansen pursued and finally achieved during her second tenure as UWFA President, the distribution of the long-standing compensation that a generation of women were entitled to receive. The Scholarship was established in 2013 by friends and colleagues, in honour of Dr. Hansen’s vision, intelligence and tenacity in improving our vocations as academics.

Lloyd Axworthy Scholarship in Politics

Department: Political Science

This Scholarship was established by the Manitoba Council on Post-Secondary Education to honour Dr. Lloyd Axworthy (B.A., 1961, United College; M.A., 1963, Ph.D., 1972, Princeton) for his many years of public service. It will be awarded to a student pursuing studies in the Department of Politics. Preference may be given to a student with a demonstrated interest in international relations or in urban issues.

Marion & David Korn Scholarship in Politics

This Scholarship is provided by the Erica and Arnold Rogers Fund for Academic Excellence. It will be awarded annually to the most promising student entering the final year of the 4-year or Honours Politics program.

Established by Dr. Allen Mills of the Department of Politics in 1974, this Prize will be awarded annually to the best student in a political theory course in the Politics Department.

This Scholarship, established by D.J. Jessiman, Q.C., will be awarded on the recommendation of the Politics Department, to a student who obtains high general standing in First Year, and who follows in Second Year with a Major or Honours program in Politics.

William & Helen Norrie Scholarship in Politics

Department: Political Science

This Scholarship, established by former Mayor of Winnipeg, Bill Norrie (B.A. United College, 1950, LLD. 1982) and his wife, Helen (B.A. United College, 1953) is to be awarded on recommendation of the Department to the student who obtains the highest standing in the Second Year of a Major or Honours program in Politics and who continues his/her program in that Department the following year.

Yvonne Prefontaine Memorial Award in Politics

Department: Political Science

This Award was established in honour of Yvonne Prefontaine, a student of distinction from 1989-91 at The University of Winnipeg. It shall be awarded to a student in one or more political science courses at The University of Winnipeg, who shows outstanding promise and has demonstrated interest in human rights or social justice. Priority will be given to a student from one of the traditionally under-represented groups (Indigenous students, new immigrants, refugees, low-income students, adult learners, or students with a disability) who demonstrates financial need and has a minimum 2.50 cumulative grade point average.
