Alexander & Catharine Smith Memorial Scholarship
This Scholarship was established by Dr. Doreen L. Smith, Associate Professor of Sociology, in memory of her parents Alexander & Catharine Smith, who were staunch supporters of higher education. It will be awarded to an outstanding student majoring in Sociology.
Dr. Dan A. Chekki Prize for Excellence in Sociology
This Prize has been established in honour of Dr. Victor Y. Shimizu, who taught Philosophy at United College and The University of Winnipeg from 1958 to 1995. It will be awarded annually for the best essay on an individual philosopher, movement, or theme in the early modern period (seventeenth and eighteenth centuries).
Dr. K. Trueman Memorial Scholarship in Sociology
This Scholarship is provided by the Erica and Arnold Rogers Fund for Academic Excellence. It will be awarded annually to a promising student entering the Final year of the Sociology Honours program and preferably, but not necessarily, with a demonstrated interest in medical topics.
Future Fund – Sociology
The Future Fund will provide the Sociology department with flexible and critical resources required to address the immediate academic priorities (area of greatest need) of today while building a secure foundation for the future. The purpose of the fund is to strengthen and support the academic mission and vision of the University by supporting the academic units, innovation and community. The flexibility of the fund will build on existing efforts; create new opportunities and open doors to innovative academic development as strategically identified by the Chair of the Department. More specifically, the fund will support activities such as faculty research, academic enhancements and development, innovative programming, chairs, professorships, facilities and infrastructure upgrades and technology, supporting students and faculty experiences gained through competitions, case studies, exchanges, conferences, faculty and staff recruitment, etc. The Future Fund will include undesignated and designated funds (if designated by a donor) that will enable the Chair the opportunity to allocate and assign funding to address strategic priorities and critical needs.
Katherine Oakes George Memorial Scholarship in Sociology
Two Scholarships will be awarded on the nomination of the Department of Sociology to students entering Third or Fourth Year who have an interest in the areas of stratification or theory, and have demonstrated a capacity to produce papers of excellent quality and of a critical nature.
Lorne J.C. Elliott Memorial Scholarship in Sociology
This Scholarship commemorates Lorne J.C. Elliott who graduated from Wesley College in 1937. It is awarded annually to a student with high academic standing who is entering or continuing the Major or Honours program in Sociology.
Marion Taylor Memorial Scholarship in Sociology
Awarded to a Sociology Major or Honours student entering Third or Fourth Year. Preference will be given to a student who is involved in some capacity with social service work.
Rebecca and Roy Hambleton Memorial Scholarship
This Scholarship, established by endowment by Mr. E. Lee Hambleton in memory of Rebecca and Roy Hambleton, will be awarded annually on the recommendation of the Sociology Department to a student who shows promise in that discipline and who has financial need.
Sociology Department Scholarship & Bursary
Assistance for students with demonstrated financial need who have completed at least 60 credit hours and are enrolled full-time in the Sociology Honours Program.
The Novek Family Scholarship
Awarded annually on the recommendation of the Sociology Department to a promising student enrolled at The University of Winnipeg who has completed at least one sociology course at the 2000 or 3000 level. Recipients should have a demonstrated interest in the environment or technology based on written course work.
University Women’s Club of Winnipeg Sociology Scholarship
This award, provided by the Scholarship Trust Fund of the University Women’s Club of Winnipeg, will be awarded to a Sociology major who has completed a minimum 60 credit hours and has achieved the highest Major GPA. Preference will be given to a student admitted to the honours program in Sociology.
