Brett Buckingham Scholarship Fund
This award recognizes a passionate student who intends to pursue acting as a career. To be considered, candidates must have declared a major in Theatre and Film and the Acting stream of study. Candidates must have completed a minimum of 60 credit hours with a minimum 3.5 cumulative GPA to be considered. Selection is competitive.
Future Fund – Theatre and Film
The Future Fund will provide the Department of Theatre and Film with flexible and critical resources required to address the immediate academic priorities (areas of greatest need) of today while building a secure foundation for the future. The purpose of the fund is to strengthen and support the academic mission and vision of the University by supporting the academic units, innovation and community. The flexibility of the fund will build on existing efforts; create new opportunities and open doors to innovative academic development as strategically identified by the Chair of the Department. More specifically, the fund will support activities such as faculty research, academic enhancements and development, innovative programming, chairs, professorships, facilities and infrastructure upgrades and technology, supporting student and faculty experiences gained through competitions, case studies, exchanges, conferences, faculty and staff recruitment, etc. The Future Fund will include undesignated and designated funds (if designated by a donor) that will enable the Chair the opportunity to allocate and assign funding to address strategic priorities and critical needs.
Howard Curle Scholarship in Film
The successful candidate will be a Theatre and Film major who’s completed a minimum of 60 credit hours,_x000D_which must include History of Film THFM-2410. A minimum Major GPA of 3.5 is required. The candidate_x000D_must show evidence of involvement in film outside of school, and provide a personal statement outlining their_x000D_passion for film studies. A combination of grades and involvement in film will be considered._x000D_This scholarship honours the legacy of Mr. Howard Curle. Mr. Curle taught in the Theatre and Film_x000D_Department at The University of Winnipeg from 2005 to 2019. He had a gentle and thoughtful demeanour, a_x000D_passion for teaching, and an encyclopedic knowledge of film. Mr. Curle had an abiding passion for film_x000D_studies and was an integral member of Winnipeg’s film community.
Irene J. Karasick Award
Established in memory of Irene J. Karasick, this Award will be awarded to a Second Year student majoring in Theatre and Film who has demonstrates academic achievement and financial need. Born in 1922 and raised in Winnipeg, Irene Karasick earned her Masters in Arts in her 50s. She was the Founder and Director of Seven Oaks School of Creative Arts, Winnipeg (June 14, 1970). A writer, a poet, playwright, professor of communications, she inspired thousands of people to question boundaries, borders, laws, flaws, and codes. She encouraged others to embrace the ever-widening horizons of gender, power, and beauty, and to never give up on one’s dreams.
Janet Taylor Memorial Award
Established by John Lyons in memory of his wife, Janet Taylor, this Award will be given to a student studying Theatre and Film at The University of Winnipeg who has shown academic promise and demonstrates financial need. Janet was a teacher for thirty-three years, encouraging and supporting students to maximize their abilities and talents, and to become lifelong learners. After retirement, she challenged herself to fulfill a dream to become an actor and increased her own abilities by completing a second degree in Theatre. Everyone is proud of what Janet accomplished and we hope that recipients of this award achieve their goals in Theatre and Film.
Judy Fraser Bursary
This Bursary will be awarded to a second year student at The University of Winnipeg who has successfully completed an intro theatre course, is registered in at least one second-year theatre course, and deserves applause and encouragement. Recipients must demonstrate financial need. This Bursary is established in honour of Judy Fraser who graduated from United College in 1958 with a Bachelor of Arts degree and a lifelong love of theatre and the performing arts.
Len Cariou Award2900
Established in honour of Len Cariou, actor, director, by his daughter, Laurel Repski. The Len Cariou Award will recognize a Theatre student or students entering their fourth year who demonstrate excellence and/or significant promise in a broad range of acting styles, including musical theatre.
Sarasvàti Productions Scholarship
The Sarasvàti Productions Scholarship will be awarded annually to a Theatre and Film major studying one of the following concentration areas: Acting, Design, Playwriting, Stage Management and Production. Eligible students will have completed a minimum 24 credit hours and have achieved a minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA. Selection is competitive. To be considered, students will also submit a personal statement outlining their commitment to community-based theatre, theatre for social change, applied theatre, or demonstrating their passion for serving the community through the performing arts. This scholarship was established in honour of Sarasvàti Productions, an iconic Winnipeg theatre company that operated for over 20 years with a focus on social justice issues. lt developed a unique process of community-led transformative theatre, working with current topics and events of the time. The company’s final act is to leave a legacy meant to support the next generation of theatre change-makers.
Steven Andrew Hurst Memorial Award
This Award will be given to a promising Third Year student pursuing Film as their primary area of study toward a major in Theatre and Film at The University of Winnipeg. Recipients must have a minimum grade point average of 3.00 (B) in their Theatre and Film courses, have completed a minimum of 21 credit hours of Theatre and Film courses, be a Canadian citizen or Permanent Resident, and demonstrate financial need. This Award was established in 2014 in memory of Steven Hurst. Steven was a talented musician and dedicated University of Winnipeg film student. Growing up in Winnipeg’s North End surrounded by family and friends, Steven blossomed into an incredibly talented musician, filmmaker and writer. This nurturing environment cultivated a strong value of education and thirst for learning. Steven was a kind, compassionate, son, brother and friend who was blessed with loving, loyal relationships. Established by his friends, family, and community, this award honours his passion for film, music and education and is meant to be a lasting legacy to Steven’s tender heart.
The Sharon Greening Award
Established through The Winnipeg Foundation, this award will be provided to an undergraduate student majoring in Theatre and Film with a minimum 60 credit hours completed. Cumulative GPA must demonstrate academic promise and recipients must have declared a financial need. Preference will be given to students pursuing a Bachelor of Education. This award is established by Jim Gibbs to honour his wife, Sharon Greening, and to celebrate her passion for theatre and film.
The William Shakespeare Scholarship in Theatre & Film
Established by Donald A. Bailey, Professor of History (1969-2005), this award commemorates his passion for theatre (most palpably for Shakespeare) as demonstrated though his faithful attendance at University productions, and his frequent assignment of dramatic literature in his Early Modern Europe courses. Recipients of this award must have a minimum 60 credit hours completed toward the Honours degree in Theatre & Film. Cumulative GPA combined with financial need will determine recipient selection. All study areas and concentrations within Theatre & Film are eligible.
