This Scholarship will be awarded to a student in Women’s and Gender Studies who is intending to pursue a graduate or professional degree. Preference may be given to someone pursuing Cultural Studies. This Award has been established in honour and in memory of Dr. Royden Davis and his wife Dr. Angela Davis, by their children Sara, Christopher, Jonathan, Rowan, and Michael Davis and their families. Dr. Royden Davis was a highly respected dermatologist; Dr. Angela Davis was a graduate and instructor at The University of Winnipeg, and had a long-standing and passionate interest in history, art and further education. Royden and Angela shared a belief in the pursuit of knowledge and the value of a university education.
Future Fund – Women’s and Gender Studies
The Future Fund will provide the Women’s and Gender Studies with flexible and critical resources required to address the immediate academic priorities (areas of greatest need) of today while building a secure foundation for the future. The purpose of the fund is to strengthen and support the academic mission and vision of the University by supporting the academic units, innovation and community. The flexibility of the fund will build on existing efforts; create new opportunities and open doors to innovative academic development as strategically identified by the Dean of Arts and the Chair of the Department. More specifically, the fund will support activities such as faculty research, academic enhancements and development, innovative programming, chairs, professorships, facilities and infrastructure upgrades and technology, supporting student and faculty experiences gained through competitions, case studies, exchanges, conferences, faculty and staff recruitment, etc. The Future Fund will include undesignated and designated funds (if designated by a donor) that will enable the Chair the opportunity to allocate and assign funding to address strategic priorities and critical needs. Type of Fund: Current Trust All funds received will go into current trust unless otherwise specified by donor. The goal is to build the endowment while addressing strategic priorities and areas of greatest need.
Kristine Hansen Scholarship in Labour and Equity Issues
This Scholarship will be awarded to an outstanding undergraduate or graduate student who is currently studying at The University of Winnipeg. The recipient will have a demonstrated interest in labour and equity issues, either through community involvement, their studies or research. In even years the Scholarship will go to a student majoring in Women’s and Gender Studies. In odd years the Scholarship will go to a student majoring in Political Science. Dr. Kristine Hansen joined the Psychology Department at The University of Winnipeg in 1980, specializing in Developmental Psychology and most recently in Moral Development. Twice UWFA President, Dr. Hansen was instrumental, with other faculty members, in facilitating the first ever study supported by The University of Winnipeg Board of Regents into gender-based wage disparity. In the early 1990’s, she inaugurated the UWFA Status of Women Committee. Dr. Hansen pursued and finally achieved during her second tenure as UWFA President, the distribution of the long-standing compensation that a generation of women were entitled to receive. The Scholarship was established in 2013 by friends and colleagues, in honour of Dr. Hansen’s vision, intelligence and tenacity in improving our vocations as academics.
Ruth Warne / Berenice Sisler Bursary in Women’s and Gender Studies
This Bursary has been established by Berenice Sisler in honour of her mother, Ruth Warne. It will be awarded annually to a student who has completed First year (30 credit hours) and is majoring in Women’s Studies. Selection will be based on financial need with preference given to students whose assessed financial need for government-sponsored student aid programs exceeds the maximum financial aid package available from the student aid program.
Susan Thompson Bursary in Women’s and Gender Studies
This Bursary was established by Susan A. Thompson, the first C.E.O. of The University of Winnipeg Foundation, the first woman Mayor of Winnipeg, the first woman Rotarian in Manitoba, and the first woman to be named Consul General of the Canadian Consulate in Minneapolis. This Bursary will provide funds to a deserving student who has completed at least 30 credits hours and is continuing with a major in Women’s and Gender Studies. In the event that there are no applicants for the Bursary, the Department of Women’s and Gender Studies may put forward a nominee. If a suitable candidate is not available, the award will then be open to any student majoring in Politics.
The Nellie McClung Foundation Bursary
This bursary will be awarded to a full-time student studying in the area of the advancement of women, and who demonstrates community service activities in keeping with the best aspects of Nellie McClung’s community activism. The recipient must also demonstrate financial need. This award is established through The Nellie McClung Foundation and The Winnipeg Foundation.
University of Winnipeg Women’s Auxiliary Scholarship Women’s and Gender Studies
This Scholarship, provided by the Women’s Auxiliary, is awarded to an outstanding student who is majoring in Women’s and Gender Studies.
Women’s and Gender Studies Postdoctoral Fellowship
The fund will be used exclusively for the establishment and ongoing management of the Critical Feminisms Postdoctoral Fellowship, to support the Women’s and Gender Studies Department and promote engagement with the study of feminisms at The University of Winnipeg. This Fellowship will be awarded to new and emerging scholars with excellence in research focused on areas such as Indigenous, queer/trans, critical race, dis/ability, and/or transnational feminisms. The Fellowship has a 24-months duration. The successful applicant, residing in Winnipeg, supports the department by conducting research in close consultation with our excellent faculty; presenting an annual lecture; and teaching two Women’s and Gender Studies courses per year.
