Allan J. and Velma G. Ryckman Memorial Bursary

This Bursary was established from the estate of the late Velma G. Ryckman. Her husband, Mr. Allan Ryckman, graduated with his B.A. from United College (The University of Winnipeg) in 1931. This led to a long and fulfilling career as a teacher and Principal in various schools across Winnipeg, retiring in 1971. This Bursary will be awarded to a student in the Faculty of Education who demonstrates financial need.

This Scholarship was established by family, colleagues and friends in memory of Allan J. Ryckman, educator. It will be awarded, on the recommendation of the Dean of Education to a B.Ed. student entering Second, Third or Fourth Year, who is deemed to best combine qualities of leadership and excellence.

Bonnie and Douglas Prophet Education Bursary

This Bursary was established by Doug Prophet, Executive Director of Financial Services for The University of Winnipeg, and his wife Bonnie. It is intended to support a student in the Bachelor of Education program who has demonstrated financial need and who has completed a minimum of 30 credit hours.

Constance Waters Scholarship

This Scholarship is given by George Waters in recognition of his wife’s (B.Ed., 1977, and B.A. Hons., 1992) contributions to the field of education and in recognition of their family’s ties to The University of Winnipeg. It will recognize excellence in education and will be awarded annually to a student who has completed the Fourth Year of the B.Ed. Program and who is entering the Final year of the Integrated or After-Degree Program.

Edmond & Dorothy Dyck Scholarship in Education

Faculty: Education

Established by their daughter, Judith Dyck ( B.A.Hons., M.Ed.), this Scholarship celebrates the 80th birthdays of Edmond and Dorothy Dyck, both of whom studied at United College and The University of Winnipeg. It will be awarded to a student in the Bachelor of Education program who is pursuing studies in one of the academic areas in which Edmond and Dorothy Dyck taught during their long careers as educators in the Manitoba public school system – language arts, social studies, and music.

Elliott-Harvey Scholarship in Education

This Scholarship was established by Dr. Carol Harvey in memory of her parents. It will be awarded to a student proceeding from the Third to the Fourth Year of the Integrated B.Ed. program with the highest standing in French Studies as a major teachable area.

Evelyn V. Mills Memorial Scholarship

Faculty: Education

This Scholarship is given in memory of Evelyn V. Mills, Instructor Emeritus of The University of Winnipeg Collegiate, who had a strong commitment to the teaching of Mathematics. It will be presented annually to a student who has completed Third Year of the Integrated Bachelor of Education program or the First Year of the After-Degree Bachelor of Education program and who has demonstrated an interest in teaching Mathematics at either the elementary or the secondary level.

Future Fund-Dean of Education

Faculty: Education

The Future Fund will provide the Faculty of Education with flexible and critical resources required to address the immediate academic priorities (areas of greatest need) of today while building a secure foundation for the future. The purpose of the fund is to strengthen and support the academic mission and vision of the University by supporting the academic units, innovation and community. The flexibility of the fund will build on existing efforts; create new opportunities and open doors to innovative academic development as strategically identified by the Dean of Education and the faculty. More specifically, the fund will support activities such as faculty research, academic enhancements and development, innovative programming, chairs, professorships, facilities and infrastructure upgrades and technology, supporting student and faculty experiences gained through competitions, case studies, exchanges, conferences, faculty and staff recruitment, etc. The Future Fund will include undesignated and designated funds (if designated by a donor) that will enable the Dean the opportunity to allocate and assign funding to address strategic priorities and critical needs.

Grace Thomson Memorial Bursary

Faculty: Education

This bursary is established by her daughter, Meredith (B.A. Hons., 1971), in memory of Grace Thomson. It will be awarded annually to an Indigenous woman who is registered in any year of the Bachelor of Education program with the Winnipeg Education Centre.

John K. Macdonald Memorial Fund Award in Education

Faculty: Education

This Award is created in memory of John K. Macdonald by his wife April and their four daughters. It is to be awarded to an Indigenous student who is enrolled in the Faculty of Education at The University of Winnipeg, who shows keen interest in using their education to benefit their community and to position themselves as a positive role model for others. Recipients must also demonstrate financial need. This award has the potential to be renewed for up to five additional years, depending on available funding. John was a loving husband and father who was empathetic to and frustrated by the barriers Indigenous communities face. Acknowledged as a mentor to many, this award honours John’s life by alleviating a student’s financial strains and positively influencing their future, in the hope that their success may have a positive ripple effect on future generations. A self-made man, John never forgot his humble beginnings and his belief that education is the key to making change happen.

Joyce Aitken Scholarship in Education

Faculty: Education

This Scholarship was established by Joyce Aitken (B.A. 1948, United College; B.Ed. 1963, University of Manitoba; M.S.T., Rutgers University) who taught high school for many years, specializing in Mathematics. It will be awarded annually to an exceptional student entering their final year of either the Integrated or After-Degree B.Ed. program with the intent of teaching Mathematics at the high school level.

Lost Prizes ACCESS Award

Faculty: Education

This Award will be given to an ACCESS student (WEC, CATEP, or ITEP) who has overcome adversity in their own life and has demonstrated academic achievement. The successful recipient will be involved within their local community as a mentor or teacher. Involvement with inner-city at-risk-youth will be given greater consideration. Recipients must demonstrate financial need. This Award was established in recognition of ACCESS students’ community service and academic achievement.
