Barry and Lynn Jones Wesmen Athletic Scholarship
Notes: Established by the Jones Family on the occasion of Lynn’s retirement after more than 44 years of employment at The University of Winnipeg, it will be awarded to a full-time continuing undergraduate student with high academic standing, who is a member of The University of Winnipeg athletic program. The successful candidate must have already completed at least 18 credit hours prior to the beginning of the current academic year and have been a member of the Wesmen program for at least one season. This award will be presented at the annual Wesmen Athletic Awards Banquet. Barry and Lynn and their sons Marshall and Bryce have been supporters of the Wesmen program since 1994, and Marshall was a member of the Men’s Volleyball Team from 2003 to 2006.
Dave Torz Memorial Prize
In memory of the legacy left by Dave Torz this prize will be presented annually to a Men’s or Women’s Volleyball Athlete at The University of Winnipeg who: exemplifies the characteristics of a team player; always shows kindness; displays strong work ethic, determination and dedication in all aspects of life; and who has a consistent attitude of humility. Nominations will come from athletes and coaches from the Men’s and Women’s Volleyball teams. The Torz Memorial Committee will evaluate nominations and the Director of Athletics will advise the Director of Awards once selection is finalized. A wonderful husband, father, friend and colleague, Dave Torz was a fixture at the University of Winnipeg who was known for the kindness and dedication he brought to everything he did. As a member of the Varsity Volleyball team, Dave developed a passion and commitment to the UW that spanned his career as both a student and employee. He dedicated his professional life to the University, first working in facilities for the Duckworth Centre, followed by 29 years as a Power Engineer and most recently as the Chief Engineer. He advanced through his commitment to hard work, leadership through action, determination and dedication. Dave was known personally as the ultimate team player, always putting the needs of others ahead of his own.
The Bill Wedlake Athletic Bursary
This bursary was established in honour of Bill Wedlake’s exceptional service as Director of Recreation and Athletic Services. Two bursaries will be awarded each year to students with financial need, one to a member of a men’s Varsity team and one to a member of a women’s Varsity team.
The Doran Reid Memorial Award
To be considered for the Doran Reid Memorial Award, students must be in full-time studies and a member of a Wesmen team with a minimum of 30 credit hours completed. Students must have a financial need and a minimum 4.0 GPA to be considered; selection is competitive. This award was established in legacy of Doran Reid who worked at the University of Winnipeg for 27 years before retiring as the Athletic Director. His dedication inspired generations of Wesmen athletes and shaped the university’s athletic program.
Wesmen Athletic Scholarship Fund
These scholarships are awarded to current students at The University of Winnipeg in good academic standing, who belong to one of the Wesmen varsity sports teams. Scholarships are given at the discretion of the Director of Athletics.
