500 Friends of the Faculty of Theology

This fund was developed to raise money to help carry on the legacy of the Faculty of Theology. The hope is to find 500 friends who will give an annual gift of $100.00. Funds are used to develop new and life-long learning programs, strengthening local relationships, and building international networks such as the new Knowles-Woodsworth Centre for Theology & Public Policy.

Doreen & Harold King Bursary in Theology

The Doreen & Harold King Opportunity Fund Bursary will support students who meet the criteria of UWinnipeg’s _x000D_Opportunity Fund. Recipients must demonstrate financial need and come from one (or more) of the following _x000D_groups: Indigenous students, recent immigrants, students with refugee backgrounds, first generation students,_x000D_and/or mature students. _x000D_Originally established in 1998 to honour Rev. Dr. Harold James King’s retirement, friends and family members_x000D_ created the Doreen and Harold King Bursary in Theology to celebrate his service to UWinnipeg. In 2023,_x000D_prompted by a University proposal to repurpose unused Theology Funds and with a passion for helping _x000D_students, his daughter Susan King, directed the funds to the University’s Opportunity Fund. _x000D_ After completing his Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Theology degrees at United College in 1960, Rev. Dr. King_x000D_ dedicated his working career to spiritual care, counselling, and the advancement of Theological studies. From _x000D_1972 onwards, he served in a variety of roles at The University of Winnipeg, including working as a professor in _x000D_Pastoral Theology and eventually appointed as Dean of the Faculty of Theology in 1986.

Future Fund-Dean of Theology

The Future Fund will provide the Faculty of Theology with flexible and critical resources required to address the immediate academic priorities (areas of greatest need) of today while building a secure foundation for the future. The purpose of the fund is to strengthen and support the academic mission and vision of the University by supporting the academic units, innovation and community. The flexibility of the fund will build on existing efforts; create new opportunities and open doors to innovative academic development as strategically identified by the Dean and the Faculty. More specifically, the fund will support activities such as faculty research, academic enhancements and development, innovative programming, chairs, professorships, facilities and infrastructure upgrades and technology, supporting student and faculty experiences gained through competitions, case studies, exchanges, conferences, faculty and staff recruitment, etc. The Future Fund will include undesignated and designated funds (if designated by a donor) that will enable the Dean the opportunity to allocate and assign funding to address strategic priorities and critical needs.

Hon. Theodore A. and Georgie Burrows Memorial Bursary

This bursary will support a graduate student pursuing a graduate degree in any program. Preference will be given to a student who is pursuing a degree in spirituality, religion, or justice. This award is administered by The Winnipeg Foundation.

Established with The Winnipeg Foundation, this Bursary is given to students studying in The United Centre for Theological Studies.

Knowles-Woodsworth Centre for Theology & Public Policy

Established in 2009, this fund will support the mission of the Knowles-Woodsworth Centre: To sponosr events, stimulate research, design courses, facilitate networking, build alliances, foster dialogue, and otherwise encourage a way of thinking about faith and politics that challenges Christians of all political persuasions to think more deeply, and more clearly, about their faith, and their politics. The goal is to help discern a way forwarding which the prophetic, justice seeking elements of various Christian tradition can be recovered and reshaped for the 21st Century in ways that permit a new hope for ecumenical Christian advocacy of the common good.

Annual proceeds of the fund are to be used to provide a Scholarship to students studying at The United Centre for Theological Studies. Recipients must demonstrate financial need.

Rev. Dr. Ernie Johnston Memorial Bursary

This Bursary was established by the Johnston family in memory of Rev. Dr. Ernie Johnston, Collegiate ’41, United College BA’44, BTh ’47, DD (Hon) ’69. It will be awarded to a conscientious, hard-working student in The United Centre for Theological Studies who is planning to continue their studies at The University of Winnipeg for at least one additional year, and who is planning to enter the pastoral ministry.

This Bursary was established by Grey Street United Church in honour of Reverend Gordon Fulford (Theology ’63), to provide financial support to a deserving student enrolled in The United Centre for Theological Studies.
