Research To Build Bridges
Villagers from Cold Water Ditch, a rural community in Jinan City, China, view with great interest and excitement the most recent book on their village, which started to be demolished in 2015 to make space for a bullet train station. The book “A Century of Change in a Chinese Village: The Crisis of the Countryside” documents the villages’ history and transformation. Cold Water Ditch is the most studied village in China and a landmark in China Studies for serving as context for the studies that inaugurated the field. [The researcher] took this photo in September 2015 when she visited the village in preparation to translate the book from Chinese into English in collaboration with researchers from Shandong University, Cornell University, and Harvard-Yenching Institute. The book was published by Rowman & Littlefield Publishers in 2018.
